Western Mining Corporation Visitor’s Centre

In 1995, the Design Construct Program  was invited to design and construct a Visitor’s Centre at the Wheal Hughes mine near Moonta, South Australia. Prefabrication in the School’s workshops began in 1996 and construction on site began in 1997 involving 20 students and 2 staff in numerous two week intensive elective courses.

The construction included timber stud framing and steel portal framing lined internally in plywood and clad externally in corrugated steel. As far as was practically possible, students designed and fabricated the balustrades, sliding doors, seating, hinges and door hardware as well as installing composting toilets. The project was opened by the then Premier of South Australia the Hon. John Olsen in 1998. In 1999, the Western Mining Corporation Visitor’s Centre was awarded an Architectural Design Commendation by the Australian Institute of Architects which was the highest award in its category in that year.

Get Involved

As a participant in Design Construct you will be involved in all stages of the building process, including developing design proposals, dealing with clients, building and documentation. This valuable process is one of the best possible preparations for your professional life.

Projects pass through several phases:

  • Design: students are briefed, survey sites and produce proposals
  • Design development: students undertake intensive courses, developing their designs in small groups
  • Planning and certification
  • Building: two-week prefabrication sessions are run during student holidays. Students are also involved in on-site building

Projects are generally long-term and pass from one group of students to another.
