Port Resolution Community Visitor Accommodation

Port Resolution Community, Tanna Island, Vanuatu

The Design Construct Program is currently assisting the Community of Port Resolution to build beachside eco visitor accommodation on Tanna Island, Vanuatu. In early 2012, on the basis of evolving experience with remote Indigenous projects, the Design Construct Program was invited to work with the community at Port Resolution to design and construct visitor accommodation as a means of generating income for children’s education.

Staff and students visited Port Resolution to consult with the community and to develop a design proposal for three types of bungalow accommodation, a main dining/conference/bar facility and associated supporting facilities such as kitchens and ablutions.

Following this proposal, students developed a design to respond to earthquake, cyclones and high humidity and to address visitor expectations while having a minimal environmental impact. In 2012, the Port Resolution Community-Run Visitor Accommodation was awarded the Chancellor’s Award for Community Engagement and was the Joint Overall Winner and Winner in the Category of Best collaborations for increasing/widening participation outcomes by the University of South Australia. The project is on-going and will have openings for students to join on-site construction study tours throughout 2016.

As a participant in Design Construct you will be involved in all stages of the building process, including developing design proposals, dealing with clients, building and documentation. This valuable process is one of the best possible preparations for your professional life.

Projects pass through several phases:

  • Design: students are briefed, survey sites and produce proposals
  • Design development: students undertake intensive courses, developing their designs in small groups
  • Planning and certification
  • Building: two-week prefabrication sessions are run during student holidays. Students are also involved in on-site building

Projects are generally long-term and pass from one group of students to another.
